The actors ponder a potential family connection after a startling revelation, while the new TV comedy explores their unique bond.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who previously worked together on “EDtv” and “True Detective,” are set to reunite onscreen in a new Apple TV+ comedy created by David West Read. The 10-episode series, titled “Brother From Another Mother,” will feature the actors as fictionalized versions of themselves, bringing their families together under one roof on a Texas ranch. The show’s title is a nod to their real-life friendship spanning decades, but recent events have led McConaughey to wonder if Harrelson might actually be related to him.
During an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, McConaughey revealed that his mother knew Harrelson’s father, and the two may have had an intimate relationship. McConaughey explained, “My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us, and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”
McConaughey recounted a conversation in Greece a few years ago, during which his mother mentioned that she “knew” Harrelson’s father. The actor said, “We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.”
The potential real-life family connection has not been confirmed, as the actors have yet to undergo DNA testing. McConaughey admitted that the idea of a DNA test is a more significant gamble for him, saying, “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
Apple TV+’s logline for “Brother From Another Mother” describes the show as “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.” Skydance Television is producing the series, with Read, Harrelson, and McConaughey serving as executive producers alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Matt Thunell, Bill Bost, and Jeremy Plager.
The real-life bond between McConaughey and Harrelson, combined with the intriguing possibility of a family connection, is sure to captivate audiences and add another layer to the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy. “Brother From Another Mother” promises to explore the unique relationship between these two acclaimed actors, while leaving viewers guessing about the truth behind their surprising revelation.
